What connects to your reflector

YSF Live uses two different network functions. Availability checks are short protocol probes used to see whether a listed reflector responds. Persistent callsign-level activity monitoring is limited to eligible reflectors identified as being in the United States. Eligible U.S. reflectors are monitored automatically; the current model is operator opt-out rather than prior owner opt-in.

U.S. activity monitoring

For an eligible U.S. reflector, YSF Live maintains a persistent standard YSF client connection and sends a keepalive every 15 seconds. Listings explicitly labeled XLX or URF remain excluded from this activity monitoring under the current monitoring policy. They may remain in the directory and receive infrequent availability checks. The monitoring client identifies itself in YSF poll packets using the licensed amateur-radio callsign KF0WSS. It never originates YSF voice traffic and does not record, store, or transcribe voice audio.

The YSF poll packet sent by YSF Live contains the client callsign but no separate monitor label. Reflector software may therefore display KF0WSS as an ordinary connected gateway or station. The packet also contains no XLX module-selection field; any XLX module association is determined by the reflector's YSF mapping or configuration.

When a station transmits, the reflector forwards the normal YSF stream to connected clients, including YSF Live. YSF Live reads only the signaling metadata needed for recent-activity features, such as a decoded callsign, timing, and an estimated transmission duration. Transmissions do not cause YSF Live to increase its polling rate.

The exact dashboard display, log format, and connection labeling depend on the reflector software and its configuration.

Reflectors outside the United States

Non-U.S. reflectors may remain in the directory and may receive lightweight availability checks, but YSF Live does not intentionally collect or retain callsign-level activity from those reflectors.

Operator control

Reflector operators may request immediate exclusion. Once excluded, the reflector is removed from the public directory, stored callsign-level activity for it is deleted from the live database, automated availability checks and activity observations are blocked, manual diagnostic connections are blocked, and any active YSF Live monitoring connection is disconnected. Deleted records may remain temporarily in rotating private backups until those backups expire under the posted retention policy.
